Introduction
In 1996 Congress passed the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Pursuant to the Act Congress set forth "Administrative Simplification" section covering three areas of regulation:

1. EDI Standard Transation and code-sets
2. Privacy and
3. Security.

997-Functional Acknowledgment

270/271-Health Care Eligibility/Benefit Inquiry and Information Response
